I believe OR Nurses need advocacy at the systems level to promote a stronger workforce, realize their potential to expand the OR nurse’s role, and to ensure a quality work environment. As President, I hope to help OR nurses connect with each other, learn from each other, and build capacity for this specialized nursing group.

Shaunna Downey, RN, BScN, CPN(C)

Staff Nurse-Victoria General Hospital

In a short time, I have come to wear many hats at PRNABC including website liaison and Vancouver Island RPO. My enthusiasms for the operating room have become the focus of my volunteerism. Though my career in the operating room is young at only 4 years old, I have sought out a variety of experiences and continually seek to learn new skills, building on my continuing competencies. I have a passion for people and education. Sharing knowledge and engaging in authentic human connection with peers to create more effective team dynamics is a constant objective in my personal working philosophy.

I graduated with my BScN in 2011, started in the OR in 2012.  I knew from the minute I started nursing, that the operating room was where I wanted to be.  I LOVE my job.  Over eight years later, I still love going to work every day.  I am dedicated to having strong knowledge and attention to standards and best practice, as well as passion for sharing and working towards implementing them.   I am a mom of two wonderful boys.  I love playing most sports and exercising, travelling, and spending time with friends and family.
